Sly Cooper Thieves in Time is a fun game. A really fun game. It's gameplay style is very similar to Sly Cooper 2: Band of Thieves for the PS2, which many people recognize as the classic Sly we all know and love. As soon as I started playing the game, any worries that I had about it ruining the series or not living up to it's standards were completely washed away. It instantly feels like classic Sly but with a slightly different look and new animation. This game has cartoony-ish graphics, even more so than Sly on the PS2, despite the graphic capabilities in today's gaming world. Even though I understand they implemented the cartoony look into the game to stay true to the franchise, I think they could have done a slightly better job. One of my only complaints of the game is that; the cartoon graphics aren't the greatest. You can see the rough edges of the characters and scenery sometimes, and it is certainly upsetting to not have that crisp clear look, especially considering this game has some really cool scenery in the free-roam worlds. Since this game is so good, I'll get my other two (and only) complaints out of the way first. My biggest problem with the game is the length of it. This game is so fun, but it ends so quickly. For those who just want to play mission after mission and not take the time to explore the area and find hidden treasures will have this game beaten very quickly. There are a total of five episodes, each taking place in a different area and time setting, and each episode contains approximately 8-13 missions. Each mission is very short, except the last one for each episode which involves a series of tag-team missions as you swap between playing the different characters, and then the boss fight at the end. Hopefully you are willing to take the time and explore the area, find all the hidden treasures, the secret bottles, etc. because this game doesn't provide long-standing entertainment on it's storyline. My only other complaint is the voice acting. This game recruits new voices for nearly every character for the game, which is sure to infuriate fans of the classic Sly. Their new voices just don't sound very fitting or right, and Carmelita's new voice in particular, is very annoying and somewhat ruins her character. Now on to the cool stuff -
This game has a TON of variety in it, so you're never left feeling bored because of repetitive missions or anything of that sort. You are constantly solving puzzles, combatting, and doing missions in different format then the last time. Some might find this feature a little annoying due to the fact that they expect to not have to get used to doing a new mission every time, but I appreciate the time they spent into making the game unique in this way. There is no difficulty level to choose when starting the game, but the developers did a good job at pulling off just the right amount of difficulty. Not too hard, and not too easy. Anybody should be able to play and beat the game with ease, and the occasional trial and error of having to re-do missions of course. (Which is to be expected from ANY video game). Another really awesome feature in this game is the list of playable characters in it. No more playing just Sly, Bentley, and Murray! You can now play Carmelita Fox in this game, and all five of Sly's ancestors, one in each episode. Each new character also has unique abilities, so it's always exciting to play the new Sly ancestor in each episode during your first play-through of the game. The storyline to the game is good, and the game never feels like it gets boring. The cut-scenes usually contain discussion between Sly and the gang, and are usually full of humor, that is actually quite amusing. Sometimes the jokes get a little old, but the charm of the game itself never seems to wear off. Overall, this game is a lot of fun, and I would strongly recommend it to any Playstation Vita owner. The game has it's minor setbacks such as being short, but in my personal opinion, this is one of the best titles available for the Sony PS Vita right now.
